15 -17 year old students from three schools of Vilnius participate at the screening of the film 'Les quatre cents coups' at the art-house cinema theatre Skalvija. Afterwards, they attend a discussion led by a film critic Auksė Kancerevičiūtė.
Before the screening the film critic Auksė Kancerevičiūtė briefly introduces the film director François Truffaut. She quotes his thoughts about filmmaking and highlights his aspiration for the real life instead of decorations in a film pavilion. Also, the film critic raises the following questions: is 400 Blows actual for young audience?; could we still understand its significance for the cinema history?; is there something unusual for a contemporary spectator in the film? After the film screening the students explore the personality of the main character Antoine Doinel, his relationship with parents, classmates and teachers. They discuss the challenges of Antoine’s life and compare them to the situation of contemporary youth. Later on, Auksė Kancerevičiūtė enriches discussion with a few biographical facts of François Truffaut and encourages students to reflect on the relationship between an artwork and an artist. The focus of the discussion gradually shifts towards the film language. The students express their interest in the long shots and elaborated mise-en-scènes of the film. At the end of the discussion a few of them appreciate that “the film director leaves ‘a space’ in his film for the audience to see and think independently”.
