Young Spectators in High School during the Cultural Marathon

Gymnasium Koper

The students of Gymnasium Koper learned about the world of documentary film through the rapper Sonita.

Slovenian national holiday This Joyous Day of Culture every February 8th brings many exciting cultural contents  to the country. The Koper Gymnasium dedicated a day earlier to this holiday with the full school day and named it Cultural Marathon, a day full of inspiring cultural activities.

With Moving Cinema, we joined them in the classroom with a screening of the observational documentary Sonita (Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, Germany/Switzerland/Iran, 2015), which took Young Spectators into the world of a peer at the other end of the world, who most of all wants to become a famous rapper, but this seems quite impossible due to her life circumstances. The ensuing conversation opened up topics of empathy, cultural conditioning, and learning about the approach to documentaries that enter the intimacy of their protagonists.
