Two groups of students explore the topic of a film diary during six-day workshop. They are involved in different activities: watch excerpts from films, observe, take pictures and film their environment, edit video material and sounds. Their final audiovisual works are brief diaries about different school spaces. The students are mentored by two filmmakers.
12-14 year old students worked in two separate groups according to the same methodology. During the first two sessions filmmakers showed excerpts from the films which reflect different approaches on documentation of one‘s daily life: Bush Bikes (David S Vadiveloo, Australia, 2002), short films by Jonas Mekas (USA, France, 1965-2002), Life in a Day (Kevin Macdonald, Ridley Scott, UK, USA, 2011). Also, they introduced the basic elements of film language. The students were given several tasks in order to explore the discussed topics. They had to draw an adapted version of the storyboard of the film Bush Bikes. The students had to depict the events, which they saw in this film, from their personal perspective, as if they saw them through their eyes. Also, they had to make a series of photos documenting a school break. At the end of the second session the workshop mentors assigned homework for youngsters – to make a very short diary (6-8 film shots) of their morning life. In the following sessions filmmakers reflected on their homework and introduced students to the editing process. (For example, the students enjoyed making a soundtrack for the film Music for One Apartment and Six Drummers (Ola Simonsson, Johannes Stjärne Nilsson, Sweden, 2001).
In the final sessions the two student groups were divided into teams of three-four persons. Each team was assigned a different school space (a lobby, a canteen, a corridor, an external space around school). The students had to make about 5-10 photos of the spaces using different camera angles, shots, frames. After reflection on the photos they developed ideas about quotidian stories which can be observed in the school spaces. Having shared the ideas the youngsters started filming these spaces. They edited video material and sound with just slight assistance of the mentors.
The student groups were mentored by the Lithuanian filmmakers Tomas Smulkis and Andrius Blaževičius.
